Avoiding backaches with these back to school backpack tips

(WXYZ) - Summer vacation is almost over and before long, those heavy backpacks will be making a return.

But how much weight is too much?

Binders, books, markers - it's enough to cause big backaches for your little ones.

With all that cramming, it's tough. But the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends packing light!

Use all the compartments and pack the heavier things like books and binders to the center of the back.

And all those books?

Well, pile them in and your whole backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child's body weight.

Sure, it might not be cool but doctors say your back will thank you if you use both should straps. Using just one can put extra strain on the muscles.

You might even consider putting down these standard bags in exchange for one with wheels. But check with your school first since not all districts allow rolling bags.
