(WXYZ) - Former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer is giving his perspective on the city's financial problems and Chapter 9 bankruptcy.
WXYZ reporter Simon Shaykhet had an exclusive interview with Archer. The former mayor is optimistic about the direction the city is heading.
"Are we on our way back to recovery? Absolutely," said Archer.
Back during Archer's time as mayor, he hired cops and bus drivers thanks to federal grant programs. Detroit's financial troubles still looked manageable back then.
Today, Archer points to turnaround efforts ultimately depending on two things.
"The two principal sources of money...income tax and property tax," said Archer.
The former mayor also says he's impressed with Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr as an attorney and also as someone who believes in making tough choices.
