Today is last day to settle up back taxes with city of Detroit without penalties

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Saturday, March 2, is the deadline for people who owe back taxes to the city of Detroit to pay up without facing fines or penalties.

The offer is open to anyone who has not filed income tax returns or has a outstanding balance from 2011 and/or prior years. The cash-strapped city hopes the program will raise about 4-million dollars to help with the ongoing cash crisis.

Under Detroit's tax code, all residents who earn more than $600 in a calendar year are required to pay income taxes regardless of where they work. People who spend any time working in Detroit, and earn more than $600 in a calendar year, must also pay income taxes to the city.
