WXYZ names Alex Garn and his family as our Military Family of Year

(WXYZ) - As part of our participation in this weekend's Stars and Stripes Festival. WXYZ-TV is proud to announce this year's Channel 7 "Military Family of the Year."

This year our selection committee has named Alex Garn, his wife Sarah and their four children as the winning family. They will receive $2,000 in furniture from our partners at Gardner White Furniture.

Alex's father, Denny Garn, submitted the following essay to enter the contest:

My son is active duty Army - Married to Sara Garn with four beautiful children.  Alex graduated and commissioned from West Point in 2001 right after 9/11.  As a result of this timing, he has deployed nine times overseas in combat as a U.S. Army Ranger, fighting in the most dangerous areas doing special operations raids.  He has been to Iraq four times and Afghanistan five times over the last decade.  He has spent more than thirty-six months overseas.  His wife Sara has been truly amazing, raising four children in the last ten years, and giving birth twice while Alex was overseas.  On top of this, their daughter Addison has been battling a rare blood disease called Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis that can only be treated with chemotherapy.  A life-threatening disease and constant overseas deployments would be hard on any family, but they have been able to remain happy.  One other reason the Garn family is deserving of this award is because they just purchased a new home (locally) and could desperately use the new furniture to help ease the transition.

Our congratulations go out to the Garn family, along with a special "Thank You" to Alex Garn for his service to our country.
