WXYZ wishes a happy Kwanzaa to all those celebrating the week-long celebration

(WXYZ) - We want to wish a happy Kwanzaa to everyone celebrating the week-long celebration.

Kwanzaa kicks off December 26 and runs to January 1 with a feast and gift-giving. It celebrates the 7 core principles of unity, self-determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith.

Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966 when it was created by Maulana Karenga.

The name of the celebration is derived from a Swahili phrase that means first fruits of the harvest. It was established as a way for African Americans to reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage.

In our area the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is presenting their annual Kwanzaa celebration across two nights: Wednesday, December 26 and Sunday, December 30.

The celebration will begin both nights at 6:00 p.m. and is being presented in partnership with the Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural Center and Bookstore.

The events are free and open to the public.
