Christy McDonald has become the fresh but familiar face of Detroit evening news as the co-anchor of "Action News at 7PM."
Since joining the Action News Team in September 2000, Christy has earned a 2004 Emmy for Best Anchor, and has taken up hosting DIY Detroit (Do-It-Yourself, for the uninitiated), delivering helpful gardening, entertaining, and auto care tips to handy, creative metro-Detroiters.
McDonald arrived at Channel 7 from WJRT-TV (ABC) in Flint. Over the years, she has earned several awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Detroit Press Club. Christy also caught "Best Breaking News Reporting" honors from the Associated Press for her coverage of the riots at Michigan State University. Christy’s hard work has also earned her several Emmy nominations for producing and reporting.
She remembers picking up the phone at 9:00 a.m. on September 11, 2001 to learn that she would go to New York to report on the attacks. Christy calls it "the toughest story I have ever had to cover," but her strong, compassionate reporting earned her still another Emmy nomination.
McDonald grew up in Troy, and graduated from Troy High School. She still helps out with fundraising for the school district and speaks in classrooms to give back to the town she grew up in.
After high school, Christy went on to Michigan State University to earn her Bachelor's degree in Political Philosophy from the James Madison College. In Lansing, she also honed her vocals skills as a singer in a rock band. It’s a skill she dusts off every summer during the Woodward Dream Cruise, one of her favorite local happenings.
Christy says she loves being a part of local events because they let her get out to see the people she delivers the news to each day.
