Don Shane
Action News Sports Director

Last Update: 6/17/2008 2:15 pm
When he was growing up, Don Shane would run outside and grab the newspaper before anyone else. He wanted to be the first to see the sports section each morning.

These days, the Channel 7 Sports Director anchors the sportscast on Action News at 5, 6, 7 and 11 p.m. Shane also hosts The Big 10 Ticket, a weekly series that previews Big 10 football games.

"Sports broadcasting has taken me places I never thought I’d be," Don says. Playing golf with Tiger Woods, he says, was "probably the best moment in my athletic life."

Don's enthusiasm and energetic style has earned him several broadcasting awards. He has been honored with 21 Emmys, including best sports anchor. He has also earned the Silver Circle Award for his contributions to television and the community, as well as several Michigan Association of Broadcasters Awards and a variety of Associated Press Awards.

Before joining WXYZ in 1989, Don worked at WBZ-TV in Boston and at WMAQ-TV in Chicago. After making it to Michigan, he was a weekday sports anchor for five years at WDIV-TV in Detroit, and the television play-by-play announcer for Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and Detroit Pistons basketball games.

Since then, Don has seen - and covered - three Pistons Championships and four Red Wings Stanley Cup Championships.

Don enjoys meeting the sports stars of tomorrow as he interviews them for the Channel 7 McDonald’s High School Scholar Athlete of the Week award program.

Don Shane is a graduate of the University of Maryland, and holds a Master's Degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado.

He lives in Oakland County with his wife, Mona, and their children, Justin and Lindsay. In his spare time, he loves to golf and is also involved in many local charities.
