WXYZ-TV Chief Meteorologist, Jerry Hodak, has been forecasting the weather longer than anyone in Detroit television. Hodak began his weather career in Detroit in 1965.
Hodak got his broadcasting start as a newscaster at WDET-FM, while studying mass communications at Detroit’s Wayne State University.
Later, Hodak would begin his television career as a news reporter for WDBO-TV in Orlando, Florida. He also covered many of the early space launches from Cape Canaveral for both the CBS Radio and Television networks.
A native Detroiter, Hodak returned to the city in 1965 to work for WJBK-TV/Channel 2 as a weathercaster. He would join WXYZ-TV in 1977 as a weathercaster and Science Editor.
Hodak has earned the television Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society and has won numerous awards for his science reporting, including a local Emmy. Hodak has been honored with the Silver Circle Award of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 2010, Hodak was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.
Jerry Hodak appears on Channel 7’s newscasts each weeknight at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Hodak resides in Grosse Pointe Farms with his wife Peggy. The couple has three daughters and four grandsons.
