Chief Investigative Reporter Steve Wilson joined the Action News team in September 2001. He came to Detroit with a national reputation as a solid, direct, no-nonsense reporter and has continued that same approach to his investigations on a wide range of issues here.
It was Steve who first aired some of the first investigative reports that documented misconduct by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a saga that started with revelations about the infamous red Navigator the mayor tried to deny. Later Action News investigations centered on misuse of city credit cards and the mayor’s mis-spending of other money, as well as a string of examples of cases where the mayor put his own interests and that of his family and friends above the public interest.
Other Wilson investigations for Channel 7 have focused on corporate misbehavior, serious questions about the safety of childhood vaccines, and military procurement procedures that have left American servicemen and women at serious risk on the battlefield. Steve’s earlier work for local and national television news operations from New York to California set standards for investigative reporting including exposes about TV preachers fleecing their flocks, and a vast array of crooked politicians, businesspeople, and even the media.
Recognition of Steve’s work here in Michigan and elsewhere for more than 30 years has been recognized by numerous awards including more than a dozen Emmys, an Edward R. Murrow citation, and various other national, state, and local honors. He was also named a winner of the coveted international Goldman Environmental Prize when he stood up to pressure to distort or cover up what he’d learned about the widespread-but-hidden use of artificial hormones in dairy products,
A graduate of Indiana University, Steve is the father of two daughters.
