Tom Leyden
Action News Sports Anchor/Reporter

Last Update: 6/25 5:24 pm
Tom Leyden anchors sports for Action News Weekend and hosts the Sunday Sports Update on Channel 7. He also reports during the week for the Channel 7 sports team.

"I'm a sports fan because I live for dramatic moments - and I try to capture those moments and deliver them in the proper perspective," says Tom.

Since joining the Channel 7 Sports team in 2004, Tom has worked hard to find unique angles in his coverage of our local sports teams. Whether in the field or anchoring at the desk, his goal is to appeal to a broad audience, not just the hard-core sports junkie.

During his five years at WXYZ, Tom has received ten Emmy nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and has won four Emmys.

In 2009, he was named Best Sports Anchor and Best Sports Reporter in Michigan.  It was his second Best Sports Reporter award, as he was also honored in 2006.  In 2008, he was recognized along with Don Shane and Robbie Timmons for his work on "Bo Remembered," WXYZ's tribute to legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler.

Tom has also focused on worthy ventures since joining Channel 7. For his work with the Taste of the NFL charity event in 2006, Tom received the "Lou Groza Let’s Kick Hunger Award." This honor is bestowed annually to the person in the Super Bowl site city who does the most to support and advance the cause of the Taste of the NFL organization.

A native of Westport, CT and graduate of Boston College, Tom moved to Detroit after a four-year stint at WFMZ-TV in Allentown, PA.

Previously, Tom spent four years working for the National Football League and two years working for the National Hockey League in New York.

Away from the sidelines of Michigan, Tom likes to entertain a party by pounding out a few tunes on the piano (Angry Young Man still impresses). He occasionally sinks a three pointer on the basketball court and likes to fool people with his lefty fade away.

Tom lives in Oakland County with his wife, Nicole, and their two daughters, Dahlia and Olivia. You can contact Tom by sending an e-mail to tleyden@wxyz.com.
