Detroit Renaissance: Expanding Statewide

Last Update: 9/25 1:47 pm
Delivered by Bob Sliva, V.P. & General Manager

It’s a bold move but one that could benefit our region and the State of Michigan. The organization known as Detroit Renaissance has expanded and changed its name and focus. Business leaders from Southeast Michigan have joined forces with their counterparts from throughout the state. The new name of this group of key decision makers and CEOs: Business Leaders for Michigan. Their goal: to return Michigan to a Top 10 state for job and economic growth.

The new organization has an ambitious economic turnaround plan for Michigan and its elected leaders. A few of its priorities include downsizing government, transforming the tax structure, consolidating school district administration, and enacting prison sentencing reforms. We suggest that the group also take a close self-examination of the corporate world. These are controversial goals but improving Michigan’s economic future will depend on out-of-the-box thinking.

Given the state’s economic woes and record unemployment, help from these powerful corporate leaders could not have come at a more crucial time; their suggestions should be welcomed, debated and given serious consideration.

Business Leaders for Michigan has a voice worth hearing and could be an important catalyst for improving Michigan’s future.
