Michigan voters back stem cell research. The fight over whether to amend the state’s constitution to expand stem cell research has passed.
About 53% of Michigan voters approved Proposal 2, while 47% opposed. The results show a dramatic shift from just 10 days ago, when a Detroit News/WXYZ Action News poll showed a much tighter fight, with 46% supporting the proposal, and 43% opposing.
Cure Michigan, a group which supported the proposal, and Michigan Citizens Against Unrestricted Science & Experimentation, which opposed it, were both bolstered by well-funded advertising campaigns.
The Michigan Catholic Conference and right-to-life groups donated in large amounts to oppose Proposal 2. The proponents’ campaign was funded largely by philanthropist Alfred Taubman.
