Representative Joe Knollenberg fell victim to a strong showing for Democrats in Oakland County and across the nation. Challenger Gary Peters will take Knollenberg’s 9th District U.S. congressional seat.
In his victory speech at about 11:50 Tuesday night, Peters tied his own success to that of Barack Obama. "In January, we are going to be able to take America back," he said.
The race between Knollenberg and Peters was marked by a heated exchange of highly visible television commercials.
With about 68% of actual votes counted, Knollenberg trailed Peters, 43% to 51% overnight.
