Clerk: About 20% Voter Turnout in City Election

Last Update: 11/03 9:37 pm

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit city clerk says about a fifth of the city's voters have cast ballots.

Shortly after the polls closed, Janice Winfrey said turnout in Tuesday's general election appeared to be around 20 percent. Final numbers would be available later.

Officials earlier predicted 20 to 25 percent of the city's 572,502 registered voters would cast ballots.

Tuesday's ballot included races for mayor, city council, city clerk, school board and charter commission. Proposals included electing city council by districts and a school bonds initiative.

It was Detroit's fourth election this year. A special election for mayor was held in February, then a runoff for mayor was in May, followed by the August nonpartisan primary. Turnout for all of them has been poor.
