DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - Records released from the Wayne County Sheriff’s office show just how drastically former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s life has changed since beginning his 120-day jail sentence.
The records, part of a Freedom of Information Act request made by WXYZ-TV, show that on his first day in jail, Kilpatrick made several purchases, including two bags of Better Made potato chips, two granola bars, toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, triple-XL long johns, soap and vaseline. The entire purchase rang in at $40.
The documents are heavily redacted, concealing even the names of Kilpatrick’s visitors. However, notes do show that attorneys for the former mayor were allowed to visit to collect Kilpatrick’s signature on some paperwork. Thick black marker also covered up the names of individuals on the former mayor’s phone list, the personnel guarding him, and how he spends his recreation time.
The few portions of the records that were not redacted provide a limited glimpse into Kilpatrick’s life behind bars. On November 3, six deposits totaling $140 were made to Kilpatrick’s inmate spending account totaling $140. The next day, Kilpatrick refused mail that was delivered to him because it was “derogatory in nature.” On November 8, Kilpatrick was denied a personal visit, though the reason was not clear.
A lunch menu shows that on Thanksgiving, inmates enjoyed a lunch of three ounces of roasted turkey with gravy, two ounces of cranberry sauce, cornbread dressing, yams, green beans, pumpkin pie, a dinner roll, and a choice of fruit punch or milk.
Kilpatrick is not eligible for parole until early February.
