Getting Organized for Taxes

Last Update: 1/07 4:18 pm
When it comes to taxes, there are three camps – those who are concerned they may owe money, those who come out even and those that get a refund.

Maureene Watts is part of the biggest camp, some 83 percent of Michigan taxpayers get a refund, yet many wait until April to file. Why let the government keep your money that long?

Start getting organized now, the IRS says disorganization equals procrastination.

Luis Garcia from the IRS says now’s the time to begin collecting all your tax documents, those you’ve gotten through the year and those coming in the mail now. Having one place to keep them all with make the whole process easier.

When you go to file, consider this. About 20 percent paper tax returns have errors, compared to less than one percent for e-filed returns.

70 percent of all taxpayers are eligible for free file. If you have an adjusted gross income of $56,000 or less, you can use free income tax preparation software and e-file your taxes through the IRS website.

When you file electronically and use direct deposit, most taxpayers will get their refunds in two weeks or less.

For more information on free file visit www.irs.gov

When we talked to Luis Garcia from the IRS, he warned us about a new scam hitting inboxes.

The email says you're due a stimulus payment and to click on a link. It takes you to a site that looks exactly like the IRS website and begins asking for personal information like your social security number and mother's maiden name. The IRS reminds you they will never ask for your personal information through an email.
