(WXYZ) - Six year old Maggie Hermann hasn’t let a physical impairment slow her down.
According to her mom, “She’s just a normal little kid except that she’s got cerebral palsy.”
In her special wheelchair, Maggie could give Danica Patrick a run for her money. The problem is chairs like this one cost a lot of money – as much as 30-thousand dollars.
Maggie’s parents, Kelly and Dave Hermann were fortunate enough to be able to provide for her and they told us “We wanted to be able to give back.”
So they decided to launch Kelly’s Kidz. It’s a foundation designed to help other families deal with the challenges of providing for a physically impaired child.
They launched in Nov of 2008 and have been able to raise $75,000.
5 year old Joshua Dragston and his parents are one of the families benefiting from Kelly’s Kidz
Christine Dragston is Joshua’s mom. “Joshua is a 5 year old 23-week preemie who has cerebral palsy with dystonia. He’s very involved physically but cognitively he’s very aware.
Kelly’s Kidz will pick up the Dragston’s deductible for their supplemental insurance. That’s going to be a big help for a family in the process of converting their home to be handicap accessible
Christine explained, “There are just so many things you don’t realize. Doors, handicapped thresholds, chairs, standers, insurance covers only so much.”
But money isn’t the only thing the families will receive from Kelly’s Kidz. Just the opportunity to compare notes can be so valuable.
Joshua’s dad, Jim is looking forward to networking and learning from Maggie’s parents to help Josh because they’ve been thru it all.
Kelly says, “As many families as we can help with the money we can provide, that’s what we’re looking to do.”
