(WXYZ) - Music may be medicine for the heart. A new study shows that young adults who listened to music had more healthy breathing and blood flow rates. That means music just might be helpful for heart patients.
WATCH CAROLYN CLIFFORD'S REPORT IN THE VIDEO PLAYER ON THE RIGHTThe baby grand piano in the Beaumont hospital lobby greets patients and visitors as they enter. It was a gift from a generous doctor on staff.
Guest services manager, Devin Lippert, told us, “she thought it would be a sense of calming for patients and guests and actually that’s exactly what we’ve found.”
The piano isn’t the only source of soothing sounds. CD players are available for patient rooms. Devin told us about one young man in critical care who listened to c-ds from home. ”his blood pressure would be more stable and his physical condition was much better and he would even smile when the music would come on.”
Soothing music and video are also used in Beaumont’s children’s hospital
Recreational therapist Kathleen Grobbel told us about the relaxation station, which plays soothing music and sweet animal images on the TV.
Grobbel says, “What you want is to be able to calm the tone in the room a little bit and a lot of time the station can help.”
There is even relaxing music that’s used to distract patients during medical procedures.
For Kathleen and Devin, the research on the benefits of music is not surprising.
Devin says from the comments she receives daily from the visitors that just walk in to hear it, from patient’s family members who are informing her of what happened to the loved one after they heart the music or had the cd player, so it doesn’t surprise her at all.
