Nurses Build A House

Last Update: 6/04 6:39 pm
(WXYZ) - It was a cold autumn day in 2008 when we first met a group of Beaumont nurses who had moved way out of their comfort zone.   They teamed up with habitat for humanity to build a 4-bedroom house for a Pontiac couple and their daughter.

In just two-and-a-half days they got the walls up and the roof in place.  But there were obstacles along the way.   Beaumont nurse and project leader Kathy Allardyce told us, “Building a house was easy, raising $95,000 was tough.”

But the nurses persevered, and today the final touches were being put on the house just minutes before a special presentation

“2 ½ years,  200 volunteers,  and the day came.  It’s wonderful to see the family finally get into the home,” Allardyce told us.

Today Kendrick, LaToya and 4-year old Dynasty got the keys to their new home.

Little Dynasty couldn’t wait to see her room and the whole family enjoyed the view

LaToya Graham was thrilled with her new home, “I think its beautiful, everything is wonderful…its just great , everything is great.”

The family put 300-hours of sweat equity into the project.  And they will be responsible for a mortgage.

According to new homeowner Kendrick Moore, “It’s going to make me appreciate it a lot more because we did a lot of the work.”

And the family is grateful to the Beaumont nurses who spent hundred of hours of their time to build a house for a family they didn’t know.

Their generosity touched LaToya, “I think it was so great they have so big hearts just to come out and help use, it was so great.”

And is the family worried that their construction team knows more about stethoscopes than hammers?  Kendrick says no.  “I checked it over, I’m not worrying about anything falling apart no time soon.”

And neither are we.  Congratulations to the family.  Congratulations to the nurses who helped give them a home.

If you're interested in contributing to this project, make sure to include "Beaumont nurse build" in the memo portion of your check.
