FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) - Even though her visit was short, actress and filmmaker Drew Barrymore gave plenty of time to her fans in metro Detroit Friday, and even had a few minutes to speak to Action News Anchor Alicia Smith. Barrymore also had some nice things to say about the Detroit area.

Barrymore charmed a large gathering at the Bonaventure Skating Center in Farmington Hills Friday afternoon in connection with her new film, 'Whip It," which was shot in Michigan.
The "E.T." and "Charlie's Angels" star is in town promoting her directorial debut, and she arranged to go skating with some fans. The first 955 fans in line skated free.
"Whip It," which stars Ellen Page and Barrymore, is the story of a small-town girl who finds release by joining a roller-derby team. Also appearing in the film, and at the skate rink, are members of the Detroit Derby Girls.
"Whip It" is scheduled to open nationwide October 2nd.
