State Budget Cuts & Change in Detroit!

Last Update: 11/06 5:09 pm
(WXYZ) - Editorial Director Chuck Stokes sits down with Governor Grahnolm to get straight talk on the state budget cuts. He also talks with three Detroit Council newcomers on the mandate for change in the City of Detroit.

Governor Jennifer Granholm and the Michigan Legislature may be a step closer to resolving the state’s steep budget cuts to K-12 education.

In an interview to be broadcast Sunday on Channel 7’s Spotlight on the News, Granholm hinted to Editorial Director Chuck Stokes that she may reluctantly be willing to use next year’s federal stimulus money to plug holes in this year’s budget.

Granholm has used her line item veto power on any budget cuts she wants lawmakers to restore. She also issued a stern warning about future state budgets to her colleagues in Lansing.

The voters’ Election Day mandate for change could shake-up Detroit city government. In January, five newly elected candidates will take their seats on the Detroit City Council. One of them will be retired Detroit Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown, the whistleblower in former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s text-messaging scandal.

With help from the new city charter commission, Brown hopes to change the way Detroit picks its top cop who is currently appointed by the mayor.

You can see the entire interviews with Governor Jennifer Granholm and Gary Brown this Sunday at 9:30 a.m.on Spotlight on the News. Joining Brown on the program will be newly elected Council President Charles Pugh and third place finisher Saunteel Jenkins.
