The IRS Wants to Give You Money

Last Update: 11/06 4:18 pm
(WXYZ) - The Internal Revenue Service is looking to hand out $123.5 million to tax payers.

The money comes from 107,831 refund checks that were returned by the Post Office because of errors with the mailing address. The IRS says some taxpayers are due more than one check. The government says the average undeliverable refund check is $1,148 this year.

In Michigan, 2,009 taxpayers are owed a total of $2,367,559, or an average of $1,181.

In order to claim your refund check, all you have to do is update your address with the IRS. It is important to note that the vast majority of refund checks reach the rightful taxpayer, and only a small percent are returned to the IRS by the Post Office.

To find out more, you can go to the "Where's My Refund" section of IRS.gov. You can also access the system by phone by calling (800) 829-1954.
