(WXYZ) - Michigan’s dreary, cold, snowy days are right around the corner. And, ladies, you know what that often means: dry skin, cracking make-up, more crows feet around the eyes.
It’s not fun.
So here is some winter make-up advice from the experts.
Switch Morning Moisturizer from a Lotion to a Cream Make-up Artist Robin Manoogian – owner of "About Face Beauty Spa" in Royal Oak – says using a cream moisturizer in the morning on a clean, fresh face is a top priority.
"You’re getting a little thickening agent so it stays a little bit more to the surface of the skin to protect from the elements and the forced heat in the house and in the car which can be very drying," explains Manoogian.
Use Eye Cream Over Your Make-Up Throughout the DayShe also recommends applying an eye cream throughout the day over your make-up to tackle those fine lines which tend to crop up when you’re out and about in dry, cold air.
Don’t Use Matte FoundationTweaking your foundation as winter approaches is also important.
Amber Kaczmarek is a make-up artist at Luigi Bruni salon in Birmingham.
She says the texture of your foundation should be silkier. A big "Don't" is using Matte Foundation in the winter. Matte is more appropriate in the summer months.
"You can stay away from matte texture," says Kaczmarek.
"Look for satin, dewy, enriched with Vitamin E, very emollient ingredients."
Use More Foundation, Less PowderAmber Kaczmarek also uses a bit more foundation in the winter and less powder to smooth those extra lines.
She recommends translucent or mineral powders for a light-weight look. She starts with a brush at the top of the forehead then works down the face.
For Color, Use Plums, Cranberries, Mauves, & PurplesIn terms of eye shadows for winter, Detroit Make-up Artist George McKenney points to plums, cranberries, deep mauves, and light purples.
"Winter is so dreary, and it’s cold outside," says McKenney. "You want something that’s not going to be too flashy but is going to give you a pop when people see you out and about."
Brush the Darker Color on the CreaseMcKenney brushes the darkest color in the crease of the eye. Then he adds a complimentary lighter shade under the lashes of the outside corner of each eye.
