(WXYZ) - Ford Motor Company is expanding a massive recall to include 4.5 million older model vehicles in the United States.
A speed control deactivation switch that can cause a potential fire risk prompted the massive recall.
This is Ford's seventh recall involving the faulty switches, which were made by Texas Instruments. The expanded recall brings the total number of vehicles recalled to 14.3 million. That's the largest recall in Ford's history.
Vehicles affected by the recall include:
Econoline: 1992-2003
Excursion: 2000-2003
Explorer: 1995-2002
Ford Super Duty: 1993-1997 1999-2003
F53: 1994
Ford Ranger: 1995-1997 2001-2003
Windstar: 1995-2003
Mercury Mountaineer: 1995-2002
Owners will be notified and instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer to repair the switch and eliminate a potential risk of fire.
Ford released the following statement:
Ford is recalling all remaining vehicles -- approximately 4.5 million vehicles -- equipped with Texas Instruments speed control deactivation switches. While the data show the majority of the vehicles being recalled do not pose a significant safety risk, we are recalling the vehicles to reassure customers and eliminate any future concerns. This recall affects older models, including discontinued vehicles. The majority is greater than 10 model years old, with some up to 18 model years old.
