Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom took a puck to the face in Wednesday's preseason loss to Montreal and walked away with a broken nose and cut above his eye.

In the teams first game at Joe Louis Arena since winning the Stanley Cup last June, Lidstrom's injury was overshadowed by that of Montreal defenseman Mathieu Carle, who was briefly unconscious on the ice.

Carle was carried off the ice on a stretcher 5:25 into the game after a hit by Detroit forward Tomas Kopecky at the Red Wings' blue line. Carle lay motionless and face down on the ice until he was attended to. He lost and regained consciousness on the ice and was taken to Detroit Medical Center for farther testing.

The Red Wings expect Lidstrom to miss three preseason games.
