SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - During this time of year local dance companies all over the world perform The Nutcracker ballet.
But this year The Legacy Dance Studio in Southfield is putting a new spin on this tradition in a tribute to Detroit.
You might call it a soulful twist on the original full length production of the traditional Nutcracker ballet. And if you know anything about dance, you've likely seen The Nutcracker.
This new version is similar to The Wizard of Oz being transformed into The Wiz. Only this time you're witnessing the debut of the one and only Motown nutcracker.
You'll hear the songs from classic Motown favorites like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson to name just a few.
This is the brainchild of Crystall Winkler, the Director of Legacy Dance Studio in Southfield. Crystal grew up in Detroit and studied with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York.
The Motown Nutcracker incorporates Christ, Soul, love and family and has never been created before.
In the classical nutcracker you see characters like Clara, a German girl who is given a nutcracker doll from her mysterious uncle
But in the Motown Nutcracker you see Diana in Clara’s place. Fritz is now Michael and the King Rat becomes King Stax Soul Maker - one of the music moguls in Detroit during the heyday of Motown.
The kids who have roles in this new production are ecstatic.
No doubt the Motown Nutcracker will have you dancing in your seat and wishing you were a part of the magic happening on the stage.
