(WXYZ) - Hundreds of volunteers will roll up their sleeves on October 6 to help drive out hunger and the effects of poverty during the first annual Hands4Detroit event..

The volunteers will distribute food, organize a local food pantry and clothing closet, paint area homes, spruce up local parks, assist in neighborhood cleanup and more.

Service projects will run from 9 a.m. until noon. Volunteers are asked to register online at Hands4Detroit.org and meet at Detroit Metropolitan United Methodist Church, located at 8000 Woodward Avenue, at 8:30 a.m. If needed, transportation to individual service sites will be provided. Childcare is also available.

A community celebration of music, art and poetry will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Detroit Metropolitan United Methodist Church. Hands4Detroit organizers will also collect non-perishable canned and dry goods for local food pantries.  For more information, and to register to volunteer, please visit Hands4Detroit.org .
