Tom Wait joined the WXYZ-TV news team as a reporter March 24th 2008, one of the most memorable days in recent Detroit history.
That was the day then Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with a string of felonies -- and the beginning of the end of his administration.
Before moving to Detroit, Tom worked in New York City at a 24-hour news channel, News 12 The Bronx/News 12 Brooklyn. After two years there, he moved to Kansas City, MO, to work at KCTV, the local CBS station.
Born in San Francisco, CA, Tom grew up near Los Angeles in Claremont. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and got his Master's in Journalism at New York University.
Most recently Tom received national recognition for his coverage of the missing Morenci boys. His jailhouse interview with their father was featured on several networks.
Tom also put WXYZ in the spotlight with his reporting on the auto crisis from Washington D.C. He broke several stories from Capitol Hill, including news that a bail-out deal had been reached.
Tom says the most bizarre and terrifying experience of his life helps shape his reporting. It was two weeks before his move to the motor city when two people tried to kill him.
"I was almost murdered by a man and a woman who tried to steal my car. They shot over a dozen rounds at me, about a half dozen hit my car, but somehow they missed me (yes, I was inside the car)... Police caught the two suspects a few weeks later."
Tom's favorite activities: Yoga, jogging, working out, obsessively reading news... relaxing.
