Quick dialogue, fast-paced scenes and zany characters are common elements for a good farce. You will find those and much more in Stagecrafters’ production of Meanwhile Back on the Couch
It's a fresh, fun and “feel good” show that opened November 2nd and runs comedy through November 17th at the Baldwin Theatre in downtown Royal Oak. Tickets are available now at http:// www.stagecrafters.org/ or at the box office: 248-541-6430.
A comedy performed in three acts, Meanwhile Back on the Couch by Jack Sharkey features the following:
Psychiatrist Victor Karleen (Alan Longstreet of Madison Heights) struggles financially to keep his posh office apartment and provide for his fiancée’s (Sarah Lovy of West Bloomfield) expensive tastes. Colleague Roy Terrigan (Jeff Foust of Canton) has written a best-selling case-history book and is rolling in the royalty checks.
Victor’s similar work is rejected by his good friend and publisher Parker Donnelly (Lewis Smith of Detroit) saying the public is bored with these books. To ease his financial woes, he takes on a new patient, Albert Brock (Alan Neuwirth of Clawson).
Albert has a love problem and has dreamed up a torrid romance novel. He gives the manuscript – one chapter at a time -- to Victor. By mistake and believing it is Victor’s work, Nurse Charlotte (Julie Fuller of Ferndale) gives the steamy manuscript to Parker. Now with a big advance royalty check and a potential Pulitzer Prize, what appears to be the end of Victor’s financial woes is just the beginning of a riotous comedy of errors.
This comedy marks Rich Wilson’s (Huntington Woods) directorial debut with Stagecrafters. Meanwhile Back on the Couch had been in the back of his mind since he discovered the comedy 29 years ago in a humorous interpretation competition. “I fell in love with the play in high school and have always wanted to see it come to life on the 'big stage." In a season billed as 'feel good,' I thought this show was a perfect fit. The show is hilariously funny and the audience should leave with a smile on their faces!" says Wilson.
Also making a debut on the Baldwin’s stage is Alan Longstreet (Madison Heights) in the lead role of Victor. He stumbled across audition information about the show while in downtown Royal Oak. Longstreet had a few minor roles in his high school productions in Coopersville, MI.
“I decided to give it a shot. I was a little nervous for the audition to begin, then when the actual audition came around, I was petrified.” says Longstreet.
Meanwhile Back on the Couch was written by playwright Jack Sharkey in 1972 under the title A Crack at the Top. Sharkey wrote his first stage comedy in 1965. He has 82 published plays written under his own name and four others -- Rick Abbot, Monk Ferris, Mark Chandler, and Mike Johnson.
