DETROIT (WXYZ) - Snow days are fun, but they always present a challenge: What is there to do all day? We have some ideas of our favorite metro Detroit snow day activities.
1) A visit to the DIA
The Detroit Institute of Arts is open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today. Spending a few hours in its galleries will be a great getaway for you and your family. And admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

2) Escape to the Belle Isle Conservatory
Have you ever been to this Detroit treasure? On a snowy day, there is no better escape. As soon as you walk in to the historic glass building, you’re welcomed with tropical temperatures and palm trees. One wing of the building is filled with every type of cactus you could imagine. Another has tropical fruit plants. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and admission is free.

3) Catch up on this weekend’s Oscar winning movies
Have you seen all of Hollywood’s big winners? Many, like Argo (the Best Picture winner), are still in area theaters. Several Academy Award winning films are available to rent from the comfort of your own home via iTunes or Netflix.
4) Take a trip to the zoo
Did you know the Detroit Zoo is open in winter? It is! And it’s rarely crowded. The zoo is open until 4 p.m. today. Don’t forget: The zoo has plenty of indoor animals to see, too.

5) Make your own fancy hot chocolate
Sure, everyone loves hot chocolate on a day like today. Those packets are great, but what could you do to spice it up? Martha Stewart offers this recipe for your own brew.
