Woman gives $1.5 million to Detroit Dog Rescue

WXYZ- Detroit - She is being called an angel investor by the Detroit Dog Rescue. 

She is suffering from a life threatening illness.  She heard the story of the just months old charity with the goal of saving homeless dogs in Detroit.  She wanted to make a difference.

She decided to transfer more than $1.5 million in stock options in the hopes the donation will help the group save dogs in the city.

Detroit Dog Rescue plans to use the money to build the first no-kill animal shelter in Detroit, and to start humanely rescuing the 50,000+ homeless and stray dogs currently living in the city. 

“This donation is just the beginning,” said Monica Martino, Co-Founder and CEO of Detroit Dog Rescue.

Martino is a television producer who has produced shows such as “Oprah’s Big Give” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

She became frustrated when the city shut down a series she was working on stray dogs for her Discovery Channel series “A Dog’s Life.”

“I’m proud of this city, and profoundly grateful that this donation puts us on the right path to building a no-kill shelter here,” said Dan “Hush” Carlisle, a nationally recorded hip-hop artist and Co-Founder and President of Detroit Dog Rescue.

The charity says if all goes as planned they could have a no kill shelter by the end of next year.
