"Yoga of the Heart" class is for
individuals with heart disease, as well as those at risk for these
conditions. This class incorporates yoga postures with breathing
techniques as well as guided imagery and meditation.
Yoga of the Heart class was designed in cooperation with the
Henry Ford Heart and Vascular Institute.
Risk factors for cardiovascular disease: high blood pressure,
obesity , high cholesterol, diabetes, being over age 55 and
postmenopausal.
Prevention of cardiovascular heart disease philosophy:
Creating heightened awareness of the mind-body connection through
yoga. With greater self-awareness, the individual may be able to
make healthier choices for themselves.
Management of symptoms of heart disease such as swelling
(fluid retention) and breathing difficulty.
Reducing stress through diaphragmatic breathing which elicits
the relaxation response and allows endorphins (feel good hormones
to be released).
Using guided imagery and meditation as tools to create deep
relaxation. Deep relaxation when practiced regularly allows us to
become aware of how quiet and still the body and mind can be which
can be transposed into daily living.
Yoga can lower blood pressure....women who have high blood
pressure have 3 1/2 x greater risk of developing cardiovascular
disease.
