Sale of first 2014 Corvette Stingray raises $1 million for College for Creative Studies

(WXYZ) - The newest generation Corvette hasn't even hit dealers yet, but the sale of the first one off the line is already benefiting a local school.

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick purchased the rights for the 2014 Corvette Stingray for $1.05 million. the money from the sale of the Corvette with Vehicle Identification Number ending 001 will benefit the College for Creative Studies.

The car was auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auctions this weekend.

Also auctioned off were GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson's Regal Turquoise 1958 Corvette, a 2012 COPO Camaro Convertible, Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri's personalized 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition and the first 2013 Camaro ZL1 Convertible off the line.

Proceeds from all the sales went to various charities. The auction raised $2.14 million in all.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray will be built at Chevy's Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant.

Tickets to the Detroit Auto Show are $12 with discounts available for seniors and children ($6 for each). Groups of 30 or more can also purchase discounted tickets.
