Deadline extended for CAW negotiations between GM and Chrysler, tentative deal with Ford reached

(WXYZ) - The deadline for CAW negotiations between General Motors and Chrysler has been extended.

The Canadian Auto Workers is continuing to negotiate with GM and Chrysler after the union reached a tentative agreement with Ford earlier on Monday. The union says they are far from a tentative deal with the two automakers.

The union says the deadline is a rolling extension to be reevaluated every 24 hours. That means the CAW will determine every day whether to extend the 24-hour deadline. If the union feels the automakers are deliberately delaying negotiations, they could order a strike.

The previous deadline for the automakers and the CAW was Monday at midnight.

Chrysler issued a new statement Monday night saying it has agreed with the CAW to extend the collective bargaining agreement.

7 Action News also received a new statement from GM saying "Both sides have agreed to continue discussions and have extended the deadline. GM Canada looks forward to continuing with the constructive dialogue.”
