(WXYZ) - General Motors is banking on a bigger bottom line by helping the environment.
GM announcing a new program to become greener, in hopes of picking up customers along the way
The Detroit automaker has become leaner since a 2009 government bailout, spending less and paying down the $50 billion owed to the U.S. Now the company is going greener.
"Our long-term approach to sustainability enables us to increase efficiency and rei-magine personal mobility to best meet customer needs and lifestyles, " says GM CEO Dan Akerson
Autoline host John McElroy says that’s all well and good, but he thinks the Detroit automaker is following successful models to increase sales.
"So far this year the only three companies to see market share is Ford, Subaru and Chrysler and it's mostly ford and I think it’s because of public perception of Ford being green and giving better fuel economy."
GM releasing these "environmental priorities" today:
*A goal of reducing energy use in their manufacturing plants by 7 percent and its reducing its facilities carbon emissions by 5 percent, and report the company has been doing so since 2010.
* Increasing land-fill free plants to 105 by 2010
* Commit to reduce the U.S. fleet carbon emissions by 15 percent by 2016.
GM also vows by 2017 to put half a million vehicles on the road with high electrification, something McElroy says the automaker needs to boost sales and meet upcoming federal fuel efficiency standards...
GM reports their conservation efforts have so far saved $66 million in energy costs since 2010.
