FLAT ROCK, Mich. (WXYZ) - It has taken eight long months and a lot of money,  but seated at his computer in Flat Rock, PFC Christopher Ochs finally has his own home to live in.

You see, last April, just nine days into a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Christopher was blown 20-feet into the air.  He was blown off his machine gun turret and into the road after his units Humvee was hit by a hidden roadside bomb.

Chris’s spine was crushed and he was instantly paralyzed from the waist down.

In June, Christopher returned home to Flat Rock to a hero’s welcome.

The only problem was there really wasn’t any place for Christopher to return home to.

Now in a wheelchair, Chris would need a home that was completely, handicapped-accessible.

That’s when Chris’s step-dad began building Chris a brand new wheelchair accessible apartment right behind the family home.

Right away, we at the Call for Action team began helping raise money for the project.

Chris’s family held fund raising events and before long more than $80,000 in donations had come in.

Now, Christopher’s dream home is no longer a dream.   It’s a reality, complete with a spacious living room, a big comfortable bedroom and a large custom bathroom.

Now, Chris has his own home.  A warm clean organized place where he can display his purple heart, his numerous other awards, and pay tribute to those friends of his who never made it back home.

Chris is so grateful.  Tonight he wants to simply say “thank you” to everyone who made this possible.

Chris says, “It definitely makes you restore your faith in humanity, to see people who are so caring and who want to help you so much.”
