Ask Benley and Bradley Matthew what they like about bowling, and you get two very different answers.
“I like that I get to spend time with time with my friends and family,” Benley told me.
“Winning,” that’s what Bradley likes the best.
What mom and dad may like best is that kids can bowl for free this summer through a program aptly named “Kids Bowl Free” click here to check out program and participating bowling alleys. Dozens of Metro Detroit bowling alleys are taking part.
Register each child at kidsbowlfree.com and each week they receive free bowling passes, two free a day for the rest of the summer. In most cases, you just have to rent the shoes.
“We see a lot of new people coming in with this,” Ed Heichel tells us. He’s the asst. manager at Thunderbird Lanes in Troy. “A lot of families, a lot of young bowlers, it’s always good. We love to introduce the sport to young bowlers and hook them when they’re young and get them in here for a lifetime.”

Two year old Emma’s mom and grandma are taking advantage of a different kind of free opportunity this summer, taking in one of Troy’s treasures, the Troy Museum and Historic Village.
Wit the Museum Adventure Pass , they got in free. You check out the passes at your local library. Each pass gets you two or four free admissions to gems like the Detroit Historical Museum, the Museum of African American History… The Cranbrook Science Center or Gardens. The Ford Rouge Factory Tour, Pewabic Pottery or lesser known attractions like the Troy Museum and Historic Village.
“You run into the standard saying, I’ve driven by you a million times. I’ve heard about you, I always wondered what this this,” Loraine Campbell tells Action News. She runs the Museum. “Perhaps the museum adventure pass is the ticket they finally need to finally walk through the gate and explore.”
Colleen Stokes has used the Museum Adventure Pass to go to the Detroit Historical Museum and the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. Now she’s brought her daughter and granddaughter to Troy for free.
“A lot of families don’t have extra money and they’re missing out on an adventure.”
That’s why she says the Museum Adventure Pass is so great.
“That’s what I enjoy, the historical part. And trying to teach the little ones… pass it down,” she says.
