(WXYZ) - How would you like to start saving 50% on your grocery bill?
It seems far-fetched, but one local woman has her savings down to a science.
Here’s Cyndi Johnson’s strategy:
Make a list of the top 150 items you uses every month:
-On Cyndi’s list are things like laundry detergent, shampoo, cleaning products, soup, cereal & bathroom products
-She mostly coupons with products that have a longer shelf life & rarely buys meat or produce on her coupon trips
Cut coupons of only the products that you use:
-Cyndi only uses about five batches of coupons she’s collected from friends, neighbors and co-workers
-She finds coupons online: printable coupons , coupon alert , my grocery deals
-Don’t be picky on brands, like spaghetti sauce or toothpaste, you’ll save more money
-Some weeks there will only be a couple of coupons worth cutting
Organize coupons by category:
-Cyndi organizers her in a photo binder with handy slots
Once you have your coupon collection ready:
-Look to look at the store ads from the paper & online store ads for sales not printed in the Sunday ads
-Match your coupons to the items already on sale
-Pick the store that has the best deals for what you’ve clipped
Keep in mind:
- Kroger doubles coupons up to $.50 & has a rewards program
- Walmart matches prices, but doesn’t double coupons
-Walgreens/CVS/Rite Aid offer rewards than can add up quick
Cyndi aims to save 50-70% on each trip:
-It takes Cyndi about three or four hours a week to plan for two shopping trips a month
On her last trip to Walgreens, Cyndi saved 70% bringing her $140 bill down to just $40. That’s worth clipping coupons and comparing prices!
