(WXYZ) - Are you a safe driver? Would you prove it to your insurance company everyday if it meant cutting how much you pay for your policy? Progressive is giving you that chance, if you allow them to spy on your driving.
They offer a program here in Michigan called MyRate. It provides a discount up to 30 percent. There's one catch... You have to plug in a little gadget under your dash that monitors and transmits your driving habits... things like how often and when you drive. It also monitors your speed, but Progressive says that's only to determine how hard you brake, something else they monitor.
"This is a new approach to auto insurance," says Progressive spokesman Richard Hutchinson. "It allows you the driver to share your driving to get a discount."
It sounded like a great idea to Tiana Kennedy of Farmington Hills. She's a mother of two. Her husband is a full time student and she just graduated with a Masters Degree in Counseling. With student loans coming in, money's tight.
"Every discount helps," she says.
But I asked her if at all seemed like Big Brother?
"No, not really," she says, and that's because the device can't tell where you are. There's no GPS in it.
As soon as sign up for the program you get a 5% discount. Then after six months of monitoring, your rate could drop as much as 25%. It will drop the most if you avoid hard stops, have a short commute and don't often drive late at night, the riskiest time.
Tiana's rate dropped by some 20%. The device stays in your car as long as you want to take part in the program. If you were to become *less* of a safe driver, Progressive says your rate could only go back to normal at the end of a six month term.
Progressive also says it doesn't share your driving data unless it's legally required in an accident investigation. Not on board? Well, this may just be the wave of the future. GMAC now offers low mileage discounts based on OnStar odometer readings. Safeco's advisory board offers a similar service for commercial fleets, and Travelers is reportedly experimenting with a similar system.
So far 100,000 people have signed up for Progressive's MyRate, or SnapShot as it's called in other states. (Michigan will soon be switching to that) No doubt, for many saving money is worth giving up some privacy.
"If you're a safe driver, then you shouldn't have to worry, right?," says Kennedy.
