(WXYZ) - A close family member of Damian Sutton says the two-year-old has died.
Doctors at Children's Hospital started to slowly take Damian off life support in the early morning hours Tuesday to see how he would respond. As Damian's condition rapidly declined, medical staff advised the family to say their goodbyes.
Damian has been in a medically induced coma since last Tuesday after his mother's boyfriend, 26-year-old Ronald Anthony Dimambro allegedly beat the child while babysitting.
He is being held on a $500,000 bond and is charged with first degree child abuse. The charges may change now that Damian had died.
Sunday, following an emergency surgery to alleviate pressure on his brain, doctors said that had Damian survived, he would have been 80 percent brain dead.
