DUNDEE, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police are investigating the shooting death of a 3-year-old boy from Dundee.
It happened Sunday night just after 4:00 p.m. in the 300 block of Rawson Street. Investigators say Damon Holbrook accidently shot himself in the head after finding the gun in a bedroom closet.
Police say the gun is owned by family friend Joshua Michael Greenhill who had been living with the family.
Officers say 30-year-old Greenhill, who has a CPL, put the gun is its case and put it on the floor of his bedroom closet.
It was loaded and had a bullet in the chamber but not locked, according to investigators.
They told 7 Action News three other children were inside when it happened.
Police tell us by the time they got to the home, volunteer firefighters were already working on Damon. He was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor and pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m.
The man who appears to be Damon’s father, Brian Holbrook posted on his Facebook page, “Yesterday I lost my 3-year-old son to a gun accident. We r all hoping to wake up from this nightmare.”
Greenhill was arraigned on a charge of Careless Discharge Of Firearm. The crime is punishable up to 2 years in prison or a fine of $2000.
Dundee Police Chief David Uhl believes stiffer charges will follow.
Brian Holbrook, who supports the 2 nd Amendment added a warning for others by posting, “Gun safety people! My boy would still b here if it was put away like it should have been.”
