(WXYZ) - A new project called 8 Weeks Under 8 Mile kicks off Saturday. It encourages people to make purchases in the city of Detroit.
The two-month experiment is designed to get a better understanding of what kind of difference would be made if spending was redirected toward Detroit businesses.
To take part, all you have to do is shop in Detroit for 8 weeks and share your experiences online.
8 Weeks Under 8 Mile kicks off on Cinco De Mayo and encourages people to shop and enjoy events in southwest Detroit.
A number of events are planned in connection with the challenge.
One of the first events you can attend is watching the Detroit City FC in their inaugural season of minor league soccer. This all takes place with an 11:00 a.m. scrimmage against the Latino All Stars at Historic For Wayne on West Jefferson.
You can celebrate with the team after the game at PJ's Lager House on Michigan Avenue, or check out Mexicantown for all the Cinco De Mayo fun.
The challenge ends on June 30.
