(WXYZ) - Many local cities are passing ordinances on the use of fireworks ahead of holiday festivities.

Earlier this year, Michigan passed legislation legalizing consumer fireworks under the Fireworks Safety Act .

Under the act, devices such as roman candles, bottle rockets and firecrackers are allowed to be sold and used in Michigan.

Individual cities including Rochester Hills, Clawson and Royal Oak decided to pass ordinances to keep people in their communities safe.

Local authorities have the right to regulate the fireworks and seize them if laws are being broken.

Under ordinances passed in Rochester Hills, Clawson and Royal Oak, consumer fireworks may only be used the day before, the day of, or the day after nationally recognized holidays.

In addition, minors (under 18 years), or those under the influence of alcohol or drugs cannot handle the fireworks.

Fireworks cannot be set off on public, church, school or private property unless special permission is given by the owner.

Community service and fines can result from improper use.

While the fireworks may be legal in certain circumstances, noise ordinance violations can potentially get users into legal trouble, even if they are following the laws regarding fireworks.

Rochester Hills Fire Chief Ron Crowell has tips for residents seeking to use fireworks this summer:

  1. Set off fireworks outdoors in a clear area, away from houses, dry leaves and other flammable materials
  2. Do not allow young children to play with fireworks
  3. Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks
  4. Always read and follow label directions
  5. Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
  6. Light only one at a time
  7. Never throw or point fireworks at another person
  8. Always have water handy in case of a fire
  9. Don’t use fireworks while consuming alcohol
