LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Senate has voted to prohibit sex offenders from loitering within 1,000 feet of a child care center.
Sex offenders already cannot hang around near schools in Michigan.
Under bills approved 37-0 on Wednesday, sex offenders could go near a day care center if they are taking their child to the center or meeting with an employee regarding their child.
Violators would be subject to up to one year in jail and fines. A nonpartisan analysis of the legislation says nine sex offenders around the state were convicted in 2011 of loitering near schools.
The legislation sponsored by Republican Sen. Darwin Booher of Evart now heads to the House.
