DETROIT (WXYZ) -
Detroit police are investigating a fatal fire on Detroit's east side. Family members identify the man who died as 53-year-old Trennece Mallory.

Sources say that Mallory's body was found in his 3rd floor apartment near his chair that was destroyed by fire.

He was known to be a heavy smoker. A smoke detector was sitting on a shelf and the batteries had been removed.

Mallory's dog also died in the fire.

Arson investigators are on the scene.  They say nothing appears suspicious. However, they will wait for the medical examiner to determine cause of death before they rule out anything.
