(WXYZ) - Cruelty investigators with the Michigan Humane Society are trying to figure out who attacked a 3-year-old dog with a machete.
"Charlie" is a 3-year-old black Labrador mix.
"It's kind of touch and go right now," says Mark Ramos, a cruelty investigator with the Michigan Humane Society.
Investigators say they got a tip call last Saturday. When they got to Warren & Greenfield on the city's west side, they found Charlie bleeding and in bad shape.
He had deep cuts to his back, legs and paws.
"The owner said he gets out once in a while and she was away when it happened. She was pretty horrified and she came down to the humane society to see him. She surrendered him to us," says Ramos.
The Michigan Humane Society is offering a $2,500 dollar reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case.
"We need help from the community. We don't want this person to get away with this. At this point, no one wants to speak up. They're afraid for their own safety," says Ramos.
Charlie is scheduled to have surgery on Friday. MHS says its hopeful he'll make a full recovery, but it will be a long road.
