(WXYZ) - High winds are being blamed for knocking out power to tens of thousands in metro Detroit Sunday morning.

As of 9:33 p.m. Monday, 3,000 DTE Energy customers in Southeastern Michigan are without electricity. That's down from a high of 120,000 Sunday morning.

DTE says most of the outages are focused in Wayne County, Oakland County and the state's Thumb Region.

Consumers Energy said at 11 a.m. approximately 600 of their customers were without power from the storm. While most of those are out of the metro Detroit area, numerous customers in Livingston, Saginaw and Washtenaw counties were affected.

7 First Alert Meteorologist Chris Edwards says we saw wind gusts of up to 60 mph in the overnight hours.

In Sterling Heights, gusty winds snapped two power line poles on Ryan Road near 18 1/2 Mile. The debris from the poles and the electrical lines fell onto Ryan Road, and  a third pole was left leaning over the street. The stretch of road was closed for several hours Sunday.

Crews were also busy in Royal Oak, where the wind ripped off a carport. The carport used to cover about 150 feet across the parking lot of an apartment complex, but the entire structure blew off its foundation, with parts landing in the middle of Crooks Road near 14 Mile. The mess was cleared by 10 am.

In Inkster, homeowner Iris Reid came home early Sunday morning to find a large tree had crashed onto the roof of her home and into metal gate at the end of her driveway. No one was inside the home at the time and no one was hurt, but Reid says she expects repair costs to be significant.
