DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police are investigating a fatal accident that closed a stretch of eastbound I-94 near Gratiot for more than four hours.
Officers were dispatched to the scene around 2:30a.m. on Sunday. When they arrived they found a vehicle that left the roadway and went airborne off Hulburt and onto the eastbound lanes of I-94.
In their preliminary investigation police say two vehicles were chasing each other down Hulburt just off Cadillac and Gratiot in Detroit, when one of the vehicles in the chase went airborne off the embankment, sheered the top of a pick-up truck traveling eastbound down I-94 and landed on its side against the highway divider.
The three people in the truck died at the scene. Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody tells 7 Action News four others were transported to Detroit Receiving. One died at the hospital, one is in critical condition and the other two are listed in serious condition.
