The funding is part of $12.5 million for 29 projects in 20 states to improve access to national parks, forests and wildlife refuges.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the projects Monday.The section of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Heritage Trail getting the work connects Glen Arbor north to the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, northwest of Traverse City.
When completed, the trail will be just over 14 miles long.The funds are provided through the Federal Transit Administration's Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks program, which awarded $40.8 million for similar projects in January 2012.
