(WXYZ) - Mark Mitchell, a former volunteer coach with the Warren Police Athletic League, has been charged in federal court with having child pornography.
According to an affidavit, Mitchell admitted to searching for, downloading and viewing child pornography on his computer in the basement of his Warren home.
He's known to Warren Police because he spent the last five years as a volunteer coach with the Warren Police Athletic League. Investigators say he most recently coached football for kids ages 10-12 in the fall.
When the Warren PAL found out about the allegations against Mitchell, he was relieved of his duties the same day.
According to the affidavit, an undercover agent using a file sharing network discovered Mitchell had downloaded the child pornography. A search warrant was executed at his home.
Federal investigators say Mitchell admitted to downloading 200 child porn videos. He said the reason was to see if he could identify any of the kids in the videos as kids he has coached. He said if he did identify a child, he knew he was going to tell the police.
Mitchell was released on bond Thursday from the federal courthouse. He and his family members had no comment about the charges against him.
The Warren Police Athletic League says all of its volunteer coaches are screened every year. They had no red flags when it came to Mitchell because he had no criminal history and there were never any complaints made by parents.
